Next To Me

I caught this song over the radio one day and was drawn by the opening piano portion.

Wanting to know what beautiful song that was, I whipped out my iPhone, opened SoundHound app, recorded for a few seconds and presto! The title, artiste, information and youtube video of this song appeared magically on the screen.

Emeli Sande -- Next To Me

I love songs with beautiful piano or guitar portion and I was enjoying the melody of the song when I decided to click on the video with lyrics and horrors and horrors, I was taken aback by the lyrics.

Emeli is singing about a man who could never exist in this world at all! Take a listen to the lyrics in this version.

What do you think? Do you think such a man exists?

I think whom she is really singing about is God right?

Music on repeat

Do any of you keep playing a certain song on repeat for the whole day or am I one of those annoying few who keep playing the same old song over and over again?

[Aside: I would like to think that I'm not being annoying to the people around me as I am actually playing beautiful music on repeat.]

I've been playing a certain 3 songs on repeat since last night and I would love to spread the annoyance to you.

~

(I)

I was driving one rainy night when this song came on the radio and it was so soothing that I just had to find out what song that was. I knew it is one of those 80s music but I didn't quite know the title. Thank God for Google. I just keyed in chunks of phrases and got the title of the song-- Love is Love by Culture Club.

Now if you don't know the band Culture Club, just tell yourself that it is the band with Boy George as the lead vocalist.

This song is taken from the 1984 film that depicts a love triangle a man, a woman and a personal computer.

I feel like catching this film after watching this video and reading the synopsis.

Pardon the resolution of the video. It's a video from the 80s after all.

~

(II)

I've always admired Bruno Mars' talents and I can't find any song by him that I do not like.

Take a listen to his latest song-- It Will Rain. It was recommended to me by YouTube as the top song under the category Music.

The tune, the words... they both reached out to every heart string in me. It's so painful and so good.

And then I found out the song would be used in Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1.

I'm not a Twilighter but I think for this song, I would head down to the cinema to see which part of the movie the song would fit into. After that, I might just start falling in love with the movie and with Cederic Diggory... I'm so sorry, I only like Rob as Cederic. I don't like Edward. He's too white for me. And then, I would start to read the books for a few hours or a full day straight in one sitting and feel so swooned by the love story and then maybe I would start to fall in love with Edward and then I would listen to the song over and over again.

~

(III)

The final song which I kept playing on repeat would probably get everyone dancing or at least I know I was grooving, whistling and mooooo-ving the whole time in my seat when this song came on... like now...

Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5

Before you click the play button, take heed that I've embedded the uncensored UK release version. So if you're a prude, just click the x-button on the top right corner and go watch Barney.

I hope you would appreciate being annoyed.

One of the reasons why I love to be born in the 80s

Good songs...

Al Jarreau - We're In This Love Together
This song never fails to soothe my soul in the still of the night.

Spandau Ballet - True
Uh huh huh huh huh... Period

The Cars - The Drive
It just have the 80s soulful tune in it.

Bryan Ferry - Slave To Love
The 80s soulful tune again.

Kool & The Gang - Cherish (The Love)
This song brings back bittersweet memories of years ago.

Johnny Hates Jazz - Turn Back The Clock
Makes me reminisc and pine for lost time

We Are The World
It's all been said here.

Tokyo Square - Within You Remain
I dunno if this is an 80s song. There isn't much info on this song or band on the internet. I didn't quite believe my dad when he insisted this is by a Singapore band.

Phill Collins - Another Day In Paradise
This song tugged at my heartstrings when it was used in one of the video campaign addressing the plight of the handicaps years ago when I was in primary school.

Bobby Mc Ferrin - Don't Worry Be Happy
Makes one happy, no?

Jefferson Starship - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now
GASP! The mannequin in the 1987 show is Kim Cattrell!!! My Samantha Jones! I do not think I've watched the movie before but looking at snippets of this video do bring back some recollections.

Paul Young - Everytime You Go Away
When I was young, I've always thought it was "Everytime you go away, you take a piece of MEAT with you."

Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is
It's just the tune.

John Parr - St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion)
Movie theme songs can't go wrong. I didn't watch the movie though.

WHAM - Last Christmas
With so many covers and renditions, this is still the best. And I never ever get sick of this song.

The list goes on and on and on... I could have a post on 80s love songs, 80s duets, 80s soul music, 80s dance tracks, 80s movie themes, 80s nice but overplayed songs etc.

Let me know what you think of the songs.

外套 動力火車

I love songs when people other than the original singers could sing them well.

My company organized a singing compeition à la taiwan's 超級星光大道 and last night was the finals.

One of my colleagues manoeuvred his way around all the falsetto and sang a song which was meant to be a duet all on his own. He delivered it with such emotions that he got full marks and was crowned the winner of 2010.

I'm listening to this song over and over again while leaving my laptop on.

If a happily married person could listen to this song with such emotions, I wonder about all the singles and broken-hearteds in the world.

I live in Singapura... I love Singapore

Happy 45th birthday to Singapore!

I've posted this "I Live in Singapura" song a few years back featuring Hossan Leong. I'm not too sure if my international readers would understand and appreciate this song but every Singaporean I know loves this song as we could identify very well with the lyrics.

Here's the cartoon version:

We Are the World

Just the other day, I heard over the radio that a remake of the song We Are the World was recorded by another all-star cast of singers in the wake of the Haiti disaster.

Entitled "We Are the World 25 for Haiti", it was released as a single on February 12, 2010. Proceeds from the sale of the records will aid the affected of the impoverished country.

Being a fan of the 1985 classic, I could not wait to hear how the remake would sound. In eager anticipation, I went online to search for the video.

Take a listen to We Are the World 25 for Haiti. What do you think?

Bearing in mind that the song is a charity single for a good cause, I ought to be shot for saying what I wanna say.

Yes, the well intentions are laudable and I hope that the song has garnered lots of donations.

But...

to inject my (unprofessional) musical perspective, I feel that the song has been completely bastardized by blundering voices, awkward breakdowns and audio processors.

Who are most of these singers anyway?

Are they supposed to be famous?

That boy who sang Lionel Richie's opening line... is he supposed to be a talent or something? His opening actually prepared me for more audio assaults to come.

I'm sorry to say that I can't appreciate the rap part too. It is jarring.

R&B, hip hop and rap are all the rage and I do like some of such songs. However introducing rap to this beautiful song simply kills it.

And the autotune --the kind of sound akin to projecting one's voice through a fan-- what effect are they trying to achieve? Cher from Believe?

~~~~
Extracted from Wikipedia:
[I]t was agreed that the song would be re-recorded by new artists, in the hope that it would reach a new generation and help benefit the people of Haiti [...] "We Are the World" has demonstrated that diverse musicians can productively work together, and has further influenced the movement within pop music to create songs that address humane concerns.
~~~~

I think that the main blunder of this whole remake for Haiti was the fact that it should not have been a remake of the 1985 classic but an entirely new composition instead. In this way, audiophiles would not start comparing the two. It may be unfair to compare music from two different eras. Who knows 25 years down the road this song may become a classic as well?

Audio assault aside, I like how life images of the Haiti aftermath --shots of smiling kids receiving aid and of the relief work-- have been included in the music video. Scenes from outside the recording studio bring us closer to the aim of this remake.

I also like how materials of Michael Jackson from the 1985 recording sessions was incorporated into the music video, singing alongside with his sister, Janet Jackson. Michael Jackson is a legend and I like him during that period the most.

There are of course some old time heavyweights in this remake like Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion. The latter albeit lending her voice in a vocal style quite unlike her usual. I thought it was quite unique paired with the electric guitar.

Non 80s and before singers worth applauding include the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Pink and Mary J. Blige.

What happened to the guys?

I've managed to find this version with names and lyrics included. Perfect for people like me who can't reognise singers. With this video, I can easily identify who saved and who killed the song.

~*~

For those who appreciate "oldies" like I do, let's enjoy the 1985 classic. I would suggest opening this HD video as a separate window on Youtube, click on "more info" and get to know all these great singers of the 80s.

I found another video in a lower resolution. You can identify with the various singer as the owner of the vidz had included the various artistes' names right smack on the screen, together with their lines. It definitely beats scrolling down the list if you were to watch the HD version above.

More info on the 1985 version from Wikpedia:
"We Are the World" is a song and charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and co-produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. Following Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" project in the UK, an idea for the creation of an American benefit single for African famine relief came from activist Harry Belafonte, who, along with fundraiser Ken Kragen, was instrumental in bringing the vision to reality.

Several musicians were contacted by the pair, before Jackson and Richie were assigned the task of writing the song. Following several months of working together, the duo completed the writing of "We Are the World" one night before the song's first recording session, in early 1985. The last recording session for the song was held on February 28, 1985. The historic event brought together some of the most famous artists in the music industry at the time.

I know of many of these artistes by names from their hit songs only. Putting names to some of these previously unknown faces while watching the video was quite fun.

Lionel Richie --> Hello, Say You Say Me

Stevie Wonder --> I Just Called To Say I Love You, That's What Friends Are For

Paul Simon --> Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Mrs Robinson

Kenny Rogers --> Through the Years (better known as the Nikon ad song)

James Ingram --> The Day I Fall in Love (duet with Dolly Parton in The Beethoven movie theme song), Somewhere Out There (duet with Linda Ronstadt in American Tail)

Tina Turner --> What's Love Got To Do With It

Billy Joel --> Uptown Girl, Just the Way You Are, We Didn't Start the Fire

Diana Ross --> Ain't No Mountain High Enough (with The Supremes), Upside Down

Dionne Warwick --> That's What Friends Are For, I Say A Little Prayer

Al Jarreau --> We're In This Love Together

Bruce Springsteen --> [Gee I'm ashamed to say I dunno any...]

Kenny Loggins --> [Gee I'm ashamed to say I dunno any...]

Steve Perry --> [Gee I'm ashamed to say I dunno any...]

Daryl Hall --> Everytime You Go Away (the orginal)

Huey Lewis --> [Gee I'm ashamed to say I dunno any...]

Cyndi Lauper --> True Colours, Time After Time, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Kim Carnes --> [Gee I'm ashamed to say I dunno any...]

Bob Dylan --> Blowin in the Wind

Ray Charles --> I Can't Stop Lovin You

It's strange how I can close my eyes and identify various of these 80s wonders (and before) just by their voices. That's how distinctively powerful their voices are.

Ending off this post with video of a cute Michael Jackson being teased by Diana Ross.

Gosh this is the first time I used the word "cute" on the King of Pop but he really looked so cute and shy. Oh and that smile is breathtaking.

It's a pity he started whitening himsef due to some skin disorder (fyi he didn't whiten himself in order to forget his roots) and got so obsessed with plastic surgery. Let my memories of him congeal in the 80s era.

Counting down to New York!

It was 2.39am. My mobile phone sang its funky jazzy tune. It could only be one person -- Cynthia.

It has just started snowing in the big apple.

Cynthia was practically screaming, "IT'S SNOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

From what I heard, New York is not known to snow during winter with the exception of last year.

I'm as thrilled as cyn and the kids as I've never seen snow before. It would be a white Christmas afterall!

After that, we got so excited discussing about the places that we would be going.

"The kids want to bring you guys to the Statue of Liberty."

Haha... They would be our little tour guides.

~~~
I just realised that never once have I mentioned here on my blog that I would be taking a long break from work to spend about 2 weeks in New York.
It's time for a well-deserved break. The last time I went "overseas" was to Genting! That's eons ago.
Most of the people around me who know keep having the impression that I'm going on a honeymoon with kh. I'm not going with kh as he has fyp to be done. So it'll just be Charlene and I flying over.
Feisty Team reunited!
~~~

Over at work, I was constantly distracted by the amount of errands to be run prior to the trip.

When I was not at work, I was constantly worrying about how I would be able to get all work done before flying off.

I'm wishing for santa to put TIME into my stocking this year.

~~~
This song by Jay Z and Alicia Keys makes me excited about my impending trip.
Jay-Z ft Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind Lyrics
Yeah,
Yeah, Imma up at Brooklyn,
now Im down in Tribeca,
right next to DeNiro,
But i’ll be hood forever,
I’m the new Sinatra,
and since i made it here,
i can make it anywhere,
yeah they love me everywhere,
i used to cop in Harlem,
all of my dominicanos
right there up on broadway,
brought me back to that McDonalds,
took it to my stash spot,
5-60 State street,
catch me in the kitchen like a Simmons whipping Pastry,
cruising down 8th street,
off white lexus,
driving so slow but BK is from Texas,
me I’m up at Bed Stuy,
home of that boy Biggie,
now i live on billboard,
and i brought my boys with me,
say wat up to Ty Ty, still sipping Mai-tai
sitting courtside Knicks and Nets give me high fives,
N-gga i be Spiked out, i can trip a referee,
tell by my attitude that I most definitely from…
In New York,
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of,
Theres nothing you can’t do,
Now you’re in New York,
these streets will make you feel brand new,
Big lights will inspire you,
lets hear it for New York, New York, New York
I made you hot n-gga,
Catch me at the X with OG at a Yankee game,
sh-t i made the yankee hat more famous than a yankee can,
you should know I bleed Blue, but I aint a crip tho,
but i got a gang of n-ggas walking with my clique though,
welcome to the melting pot,
corners where we selling rocks,
afrika bambaataa sh-t,
home of the hip hop,
yellow cab, gypsy cab, dollar cab, holla back,
for foreigners it aint fitted they forgot how to act,
8 million stories out there and their naked,
cities is a pity half of y’all won’t make it,
me i gotta plug Special Ed and i got it made,
If Jeezy’s payin LeBron, I’m paying Dwayne Wade,
3 dice cee-lo
3 card Monte,
labor day parade, rest in peace Bob Marley,
Statue of Liberty, long live the World trade,
long live the king yo,
I’m from the empire state thats…
Welcome to the bright light..
Lights is blinding,
girls need blinders
so they can step out of bounds quick,
the side lines is blind with casualties,
who sipping life casually, then gradually become worse,
don’t bite the apple Eve,
caught up in the in crowd,
now your in-style,
and in the winter gets cold en vogue with your skin out,
the city of sin is a pity on a whim,
good girls gone bad, the cities filled with them,
Mami took a bus trip and now she got her bust out,
everybody ride her, just like a bus route,
Hail Mary to the city your a Virgin,
and Jesus can’t save you life starts when the church ends,
came here for school, graduated to the high life,
ball players, rap stars, addicted to the limelight,
MDMA got you feeling like a champion,
the city never sleeps better slip you a Ambien
One hand in the air for the big city,
Street lights, big dreams all looking pretty,
no place in the World that can compare,
Put your lighters in the air, everybody say yeaaahh
come on, come,
yeah
On a roller coaster ride of emotions
Of late, I’ve been hurt… dejected… loved… troubled… unappreciated… cheerful… stressed… heartbroken… jovial… wistful… depressed… chirpy… moody… wronged…
I’m trying very hard to be nonchalant now, taking everything in stride and not to open my mouth so much for fear of saying the wrong things.
I hate to be on an emotional roller coaster.
Either let me be happy all the way or sad all the way. It’s very tiring to have to keep switching mode.
I always try to mask all sadness by pretending to be indifferent, switching topics or walking away.
I really tried to control my tears for so long.
Sometimes, having a good cry and washing my heart is more sound than keeping it inside and tearing me apart.
However, I continue to feel so wronged and misunderstood.
Whichever side I take, I know that I will be blamed.
Why do you always vent you anger on me when all I wanted was for all to be well?
Why is it that every word I say would be misinterpreted and turned against me?
Why is it that whatever I try to do is never enough?
Every word you say feels like nails driving into my heart.
Why do you always tear the wounds of my heart just when it is beginning to heal?
How can you pretend that nothing has happened after that?
I’m sick of being a punching bag.
I’m sick of being misunderstood.
I’m sick of it all.
I wish that I could just lock myself up in my room and be immersed in my own little bubble, away from all physical communication, just me in my own little world.
I’m a high ‘S’ person and a true blue Gemini when it comes to split personality. I will cry one minute and crack jokes the next so don’t have to worry so much for me. In the past whenever I feel certain emotions stirring, I would just take out a pen and notebook and start pouring my thoughts out. After that I would feel better. Similarly for now, I would still open my notebook (only that it is a laptop) and start typing all my thoughts out.
*~*~*~*
I’ve been playing this song over and over again these two nights.
It’s a very beautiful piece. It gives me a hauntingly romantic sentiment. It leaves me melancholic yet delighted. An enchanting piece which matched my moods perfectly these nights.
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence by Sakamoto Ryuichi on the piano, Everton Nelson on the violin and Jaques Morelenbaum on the cello.
I really love this version. One of the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard. The trio pairing is brilliant.
If you listen carefully, it is the tune from The Leap Years trailer. I was captivated by the tune and went searching for the title.
From there, I found the acoustic guitar version which is worth a look too.
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence by Kotaro Osio on acoustic guitar
Amazing skills! One of the youtube users likened his way of playing the guitar to a gu zheng and I can’t agree more.
After reading the comments and clicking around, I found out that the music is composed for the movie of the same title. The movie is set during the World War II period and I think there are themes of homosexuality, clash of cultures, honour, forbidden love and hara-kiri involved. I would bawl my eyes out in this one.
Scenes from the movie accompanied by touching vocals
From what I gathered, the music itself without the vocals is titled “Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence”. With vocals by David Sylvian, it is known as “Forbidden Colours”.
I wonder if the tape, vcd or dvd is available in Singapore. It is after all a 1982 production.
Experiences during work thus far…
excessive heart palpitation
pressure cooker
wish for more hours in a day
cumulative frustrations
waning love for kids
diminishing interest
in a dilemma
Stay on? Move on?
Dilemma
I’ve got a 2nd interview for another job. I was more drawn to the change in field (I’m sick of the edu line) and the attractive salary. I won’t say much about it coz I’m not really sure what I want now. (I hadn’t wanted to say this. Only 3 colleagues have my blog link—one had left, one is leaving and I don’t want the one staying to feel sad.)
I’ve made my intentions (that I won’t be staying here for long) known to big boss last year. Just to get them prepared and also outrightly told them that I was doing too much work. They had a short meeting with me just this week to discuss about my intention (whether it still holds), my prospects and salary adjustment for the coming appraisal if I should stay.
Over time, this job has made me sick of being in the education line. It has made me sick of doing research and writing. It has made me a much quieter person for all I want is a good quiet night’s rest after all the prolonged strain on my vocal chords.
It has made me feel inadequate at times as I have always known myself to be able to handle all kinds of kids. I realised that I cannot give too much of myself as no matter what I did, I cannot always be helping all the naughty or weak students.
Worse of all, it has made me lose my love for children. I’ve become a very bitchy teacher who keeps scolding my students. I tried all kinds of approach and had no choice but to resort to scolding. I’ve thrown whatever I’ve learnt in my ex co outta the window because some kids really need a good trashing at times.
You know how I’ve always loved to be a young mummy? Well, not any longer. I just don’t like kids that much anymore.
Kh felt that I was really too stressed and told me to quit. He suggested just giving tuition for the time being while taking a break. I don’t wanna quit without a job. Then I started harbouring thoughts of all the things I could do if I were to take a break. I could really do a lot and I won’t be staying at home feeling useless. However, it quickly dawned on me that if I quit just like that, I would be very selfish. I won’t be able to provide as much for my family. That would most certainly be frowned upon.
Yesterday was the day when my “lease” was up. I’ve moved down, shifted to the 2nd floor where all the language personnel congregate as planned. My primary English department was due to move down since January but I kept prolonging my time by giving excuse that I’ve got so much work to do and no time to move down.
I’m not really upset that I’ll be moving down coz it didn’t really matter much to me. Since I joined the company in 2006, I did not bother decorating my workstation due to busyness, sheer laziness and the thought that I may leave anytime. Who knows, my moving down would give me the impetus to start my inspirational board.
I will definitely miss the people in my room and all the laughter we shared. I will definitely miss my huge corner table in that conducive space. However, in this case of bo-bian-ity, I really had to move.
The room on the 2nd floor was soooooooooo quiet yesterday that it was stifling. Throughout my few hours of moving and packing, I kept yakking and suaning people and making lotsa noise. It was only after I had settled down did I realise that I’ve been so noisy all along. For the rest of the day, I spoke in whispers and laughed in whispers too.
I felt so missed by my ex room people whenever they pretended to cry at my moving or whenever they exclaimed when they saw me. One even claimed she could smell my presence (my rose oil fragrance la) when we were in ladies. Haha…
Although I feel stressed at work and frustrated at the workload, the naughty kids and other stuff, I still feel happy at times. At least it keeps me away from all the troubles at home.
SBC Shows & Songs are Solid + Mark Ryden Mysterious Works
Just now over at work, viv and I had a ball of a time reminiscing the good old SBC shows and songs.
She told me that she has 3 CDs of SBC and TCS songs and asked me if I wanna listen to them. I was like “bring it on man”. I can do a guessing game with the songs.
I used to be a TV fanatic.
Ask me ANY 6.30 cartoons theme song of the 80s and early 90s and I can either sing it or hum it for you.
Care Bears, Gummi Bears, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Captain Planet, My Little Ponies, Denver the Last Dinosaur, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dennis the Menace, Ducktales, Dark Wing Duck, Rescue Rangers, Transformers etc etc etc… …
Armed with an old but trusty walkman recorder, my er jie and I used to rush to the TV speaker to tape cartoon songs.
Same goes for all the SBC shows 主题曲 and 插曲.
Last episode night would always be frantic coz it would be the last chance to tape the songs.
Yup, so back to the topic.
Viv is good. She really wins hands down. She should go and take part in games and quiz that test the participants’ knowledge of Channel 8 shows.
Wanna do some reminiscing of old shows and songs? Wikipedia has them!
I only remember from 咖啡乌 and 青春123 onwards.
As we listened (and worked), we would sing and hum and recall what the shows were about and who acted in them. We also started talking about other shows and songs which weren’t in her CD. Then we talked about all the so called handsome actors at that time. She is the 1st person I know who knows all the names of the past artistes and even know which artistes I was referring too just by describing their pattern.
Do you all recall these names?
Lin MingzheLin YishengCao JianpingShen JingxingWu KaishenChunyu Shan Shan.
These are actors we find not too bad looking and who can act too but we don’t see them on screen anymore. There are also some actresses whom we don’t see onscreen anymore but we can’t really remember their names. Only could recall Ye Shumei, Tang Miaoling and Huang Peiru. The actors were definitely more prominent than the actresses.
Her song list was pretty impressive. She has the very old songs like:
● 青春123
(du du du du du…青春123 la la la)
● 边缘少年
(the wayward kids have since morphed into the likes of uncle like Li Nanxing and aunty like Yang Libing)
● 窈窕淑女
(that happy fair ladies show with Zoe, Aileen and Jazreel)
● 生活歌手
(NICE songs! Chen Liping with 3 handsome guys singing all the way. Who are the 3 guys ah? Chen Jianhui? Lin Yisheng? Li Nanxing?)
● 牛车水人家
(I can’t really remember the plot)
● 舞榭歌台
(NICE song!)
● 金兰结
(I super hate that show coz Ye Shumei’s reel life was so sad!)
● 飞跃巅峰
(That one that got everyone liking volleyball)
● 出人头地
(My ultimate favourite!)
While I could remember most of the songs, my ultimate favourite is 出人头地 theme song 生命过客 by 童安格. Great tune. Meaningful lyrics.
<<生命过客>>
你在忙碌的追求什么
在孤寂的角落
你知道失去的也多
在拥有的角落
你是否曾经好好珍惜
在失去的时候
是否依然那么在意
一生要爱过几回
才了解爱的真谛
Listen here.
I also like all the songs from 生活歌手. It was one of my favourite shows. I will never forget that xtina lost my tape in primary school. I was devastated. She was so apologetic that she replaced it with another xin yao ge shou tape. Haha… I bet you've forgotten about this incident.
Here's the 主题曲 titled 黎明的心.
VIV I FOUND THE HE2 CHANG4 VERSION!!! Must click muct click!
The 插曲 titled 你的倒影.
I had this impression that Chen Liping's voice was very high pitched and sweet because of this show.
Another favourite is 谭咏麟’s 让爱继续. I forgot what show was that. Any of you remember?
锦绣前程 (I forgot if that's the song or the show's title but it's sung by 关德辉) and Purple rain anyone? Those were good too.
70s and 80s babies… Do all these songs ring a bell?
Gosh I feel so nostalgic now.
Were the shows and songs really better back then or what?
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I’ve been sleeping at 5am, 6am and 8.30am for the past 3 nights/ mornings because of Mark Ryden.
Mark Ryden’s morbid paintings repulse yet attract and I was really enthralled by them. They filled me with awe and wonder that I just had to spend the time unravelling their representations and doing my own interpretation.
Some of them spooked me. The expressions and mystified gaze of the cherubically evil children seem to penetrate deep into the heart. I looked away, only to find myself staring back into their eyes again.
I don’t know why I’m so drawn to his works. All I know is he is one artist who has successfully blend the cute and the creepy and takes it to a whole new level.
I smsed kh:
I’ve officially idolised Mark Ryden. If you dunno who he is, go and google. You’ll wonder if your angelic darling is actually a devil in disguise.
His reply:
Oh is ryan [sic] the one who is into the morbid arts?
-_-
Somehow I felt it sounded like “Oh is Sirius the one who is into the dark arts?”
The most un-morbid painting of Ryden which happens to be my favourite is ‘Saint Barbie’.
Barbie worshipping? Idols and celebrities worshipping? Literal or metaphorical? The values that youngster place on nowadays are certainly frowned upon and is brilliantly portrayed by Ryden here.
And this is just one of the slightly morbid ones. ‘Butcher Bunny’.
Feminine bunny butchering meat? Jesus on the counter top? I've spotted tons of implications in this painting but I shan't say them out.
The one with the meet up, pig out excursion, simba & chipmunk face in 1973
Long awaited meet up with Fantastic 4 aka F4
6th October 2007
The name is so corny and I used it on my blog just for fun. Who knows, the rest of them started calling ourselves with that name too.
This outing was supposed to be held in August to celebrate wy and hs’s birthday but it got postponed till now.
We met up for Jap food at Waraku @The Central.
It was my first time there. Em said, “Welcome the mountain tortoise to the river!”
We had an unpleasant dining experience as the air con wasn’t working well. We were sweating while eating. I didn’t think much of the food too. The food wasn’t too bad but it isn’t as great either.
Check out the size of the bowl. That was how big our bowls were. It would help if the food tasted better.
Nice river view
wy & hs
They just had to keep snapping and snapping coz they always deem the previous one too ugly.
em & me
Just flashed, unflashed will do.
wy & her fila bag which I so wanna kop for myself.
When I was editing this photo, I realised that we didn’t snap one with hs and her present. I still remember she was getting all ready to pose with her bag but we were too engrossed in wrapping up our conversation up before wy left. Hahaha… Poor hs!
It’s always great hanging out with all of you coz the conversations are always so relaxed. Updates are frequent with no missing link, no tension, no awkward moments and we can just talk about ANYTHING under the sun. Can talk till mei wan mei liao.
There are really lots and lots of clothes and accessories shops. My eyes lit up for I haven’t been shopping for a loooong time. It’s indeed a place catered to the female customers. I hate the layout of the mall. You have to worm from makan places to fashion spaces because they seem to be located at sections of the building which are invisible to each other.
I bought two new tops which can be worn for work too. I seriously need a working clothes wardrobe! I’m wearing the same clothes over and over again while all my 101 spags, tanks, low cut tops and tees are lying obsolete in my wardrobe.
Met up with tailtail (deardear) and took some random pics.
Just Eat company excursion
9th October 2007
We had a shi zi lu kou excursion-game around bugis area. It was such an eye opener for me. I’m so gonna try out some of the food stalls and go for little walks in Singapore more often.
My group was in charge of this event but I didn’t contribute a thing except to be facilitator. I think the two main colleagues that came up with the whole game really deserve a round of applause. It was really quite out of the ordinary kind of excursion and it was fun too.
The clues...
We were divided into 6 groups each with unique name.
Take the first word from each envelope and we have "shi zi lu jou chu fa". How creative!
What's inside the facilitator's envelope
I’m sure the group S people would love to play this game together for we are so united! (Hey we won the best team effort during team building) But since our group was in charge, we had to be facilitators and mingled with the other groups too. The group I facilitated was a little quiet and cliquish but as the game progresses, it got better.
Piecing the puzzle which led to the check point
Checkpoint National Library
The desserts here are worth a try. Very unique! Gonna check out this stall and savour the desserts slowly next time.
My favourite outta all the dishes savoured-- Beef noodles!
The soup is soooo delicious that another group member and I continued sitting there and slurping the soup away when all the rest had run off to the next "pit stop". It's damn funny lor. When the rest thought that we had finished and started running away, we were like, "This is good stuff man!" and we just kept slurping away before catching up with them. I'm so gonna drag kh to the stall to try it out again.
For a group that was not so united and chatty, often bumping into other groups which were one stop ahead of us, we were quite happy that we came in 3rd.
The last stop was memorable! We were to end at NAFA building. At the traffic light, we spotted another group and we started shooting friendly daggers at one another. The other facilitator and I were urging our group members to run once the green man appeared. The usually buay onz group members asked us if NAFA was indeed the last stop and if it was they would really cheong for us. So once the green man came on, we ran as quickly as our legs could carry. The other group also started running. There we were, two groups zipping down the lane with many uncles and auntie sitting along coffee shops la kopi and passers-by cheering for us! I tink they think it was some kind of Amazing Race.
That day, I discovered that I could still run quite quickly. Papilios are really made for running! Hence, I decided to procrastinate no more and get myself a new pair of running shoes for exercise. The last time I ran was 2 years ago, no? It’s time to adopt a healthier lifestyle!
Destination NAFA...
me, the one who realised she can still run
Went for supper at Selegie's famous tau huey... We were so thirsty that we could only order chin chow. That was good! Most delicious chin chow I've ever tasted.
The kt people
I took some time off to visit baba before work that day. Poor girl look so lethargic. Together with the drip poking her little paw, she looked even more pitiful!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Welcome home, Baba!
11th October 2007
We cleaned out her tray and laid her favourite cushion. I even cut my old obiang t shirt for blanket and tucked her into bed. Her body temperature was still quite low hence the blanket.
She looked so snug and guai under the “blanket”. She usually doesn’t like to be covered.
The next moment, she became like this…
The vet said that if we were to put a time on how long she would survive, it would be a month. A MONTH! Poor baba. Now we are trying to let her live her life to the fullest. My sisters and I are reasearching for home care online. With proper home care, the strong simba would definitely make it past 1 month. I'm confident of that. But for now, I don't dare to venture too far away from home w/o immediate transport for fear that something would happen to her.
Chipmunk Cheeks
12th October 2007
I had my wisdom tooth surgery and now I look like a freaking chipmunk!
Ok it’s just one side, so now I look like half of a freaking chipmunk.
Only that I don’t look as cute.
The pain has been plaguing for months but I kept putting off the appointment, trying to pick an appropriate period when I could enjoy my 5 day mc without having to worry about work. However, Thursday was the last straw. The stubborn tooth was pushing against my cheek and other teeth so much that the intensity caused pain to my left jaw, left cheek and left part of the head for the entire day. I could not tahan anymore and had to bring forward my appointment with the dentist whom I kept canceling on.
Being a well-known procrastinator, I applaud myself whenever I make sudden prudent decisions based on my blink 2 seconds judgment. I parted with my $420 most willingly thinking that I could part with the pain too.
Alas, the thought of making a prudent decision lasted only as long as the anesthesia.
Anyway, the dentist and nurse commented that my tooth is very nice and full. The nurse said can make necklace wor.
PAIN PAIN PAIN!!!!!!!!!!! I'm trying not to take painkillers too often so I have to bear with the pain.
1973 by James Blunt is currently my song of the moment. Take a listen to it.
Great tunes! Very nostalgic and laidback… I could almost imagine my little mtv of the days gone by with this song.
I think the player on my blog isn't really working. Those reading this, could you turn on your speakers and let me know if it's working?
Look at how my water babies have grown.
Without asking, my mum emptied the container of water and decided to use these for her money plant.
Canny: Jo, be strong too, for urself, for Simba!! Will keep her in my prayers. I have a pet myself, entirely can understand how u feels. its really heartaching..'Shen lao pin si' is unavoidable. We gotta cherish the happy times & create keepsake memories!! Hope Simba is strong to overcome & fight against the illness. *big hugs to u*
Thank you so much babe for the hug and keeping her in your prayers. She's not so lao yet... 7 years old.. so I hope she can survive even longer. When she was at the vet under critical condition, my sisters and I were looking at all her photos and videos and so many of them showed us "bullying" her. OOps... But yeah... the memories.. we kept laughing at the videos. Now we must treat her like queen.. cannot bully her til her last day. Can't bear the thought of that.
ajmal: do u know how to place meez widget in blogger??
Hi, sorry for this late reply. Hope you’ve found out how to do it. I don’t think I’m much of a help here as I dunno what widget is. But I used photobucket to upload the animation on blogger.
clover: Hi is the black dress worn on 2Sep07 a desiner piece? How much is it? Appreciated.
Hi… You mean designer piece? You can say that I suppose. It’s by ABS. Not really popular in sg but he dresses Miss Teen USA and Beyonce. That was what they told me.
WS: Do u do rebond at xiuzhen? How do u look different in diff occasion? Do u haf double or single eye lid? Do u wear special contacts? I dn tink Hairspray was gd too. Zac is cute. Hope ur cat is well.
Hihi.. Wow! You managed to squeeze so many questions in 1 tag! Which hair you referring to? My past entries? Now it’s curls and no, I didn’t rebond at Auntie Xiuzhen. I’ve got small double eyelids which become single at times. I wear monthly disposable and I don’t wear coloured contacts or big eye contacts if that’s what you mean by “special”. My cat has returned from the vet but she doesn’t have long to live. Thanx for your concern.
The virus are waging war in my body again
I slept till noon today feeling very weak. My cough came back. My throat hurts again. My nose is leaking like nobody’s business and each time I sneeze, my throat just feels so raw. Having an achey face and head too due to all the sneezing and blowing.
I thought I was on the road to recovery but all these came back.
I’m damn angry with MYSELF and my STUPID BODY!!! WHY CAN’T I RECOVER SMOOTHLY???
My mum started scolding me again. She loves to scold me whenever I’m sick. But this time, she scolded me for a reason. She accused me of not finishing my medicine which I vehemently denied till she told me that she had found 2 more of my antibiotic tablets. They were still sealed in the foil but the whole thing came out from the tablet Ziploc bag and into the plastic bag which I’ve been careless enough to miss.
No wonder all my symptoms came back. I thought I had finished all my antibiotics!
Shit la… now those viruses will be even stronger than their dead counterparts.
I know all of you must be very sick of the previous song on my blog by now as I’m getting quite sick of it too even though I don’t turn on my speaker 99% of the time.
Love the new Maroon 5 song playing on my blog now. Love the funky beat and tune and the way the chorus is sung in a slight falsetto. Went to search for the lyrics and was horrified at the first verse and the f***. Not like I’m a prude but I wasn’t expecting such a tune to have such sexually charged lyrics. Wikipedia explained that besides being a song about a relationship gone wrong, it’s also about the frustration at the state of politics and US role in the Iraq war..
Makes Me Wonder
[Verse]
I wake up with blood-shot eyes
Struggled to memorize
The way it felt between your thighs
Pleasure that made you cry
Feels so good to be bad
Not worth the aftermath, after that
After that
Try to get you back
[Bridge]
I still don't have the reason
And you don't have the time
And it really makes me wonder
If I ever gave a f**k about you
[Chorus]
Give me something to believe in
Cause I don't believe in you
Anymore, Anymore
I wonder if it even makes a difference to try
(Yeah)
So this is goodbye
[Verse]
God damn, my spinning head
Decisions that made my bed
Now I must lay in it
And deal with things I left unsaid
I want to dive into you
Forget what you're going through
I get behind, make your move
Forget about the truth
[Bridge]
I still don't have the reason
And you don't have the time
And it really makes me wonder
If I ever gave a f**k about you
[Chorus 1 + 2]
Give me something to believe in
Cause I don't believe in you
Anymore, Anymore
I wonder if it even makes a difference,
It even makes a difference to try (yeah)
And you told me how you're feeling
But I don't believe it's true
Anymore, Anymore
I wonder if it even makes a difference to cry
(Oh no)
So this is goodbye
[Breakdown]
I've been here before
One day a week
And it won't hurt anymore
You caught me in a lie
I have no alibi
The words you say don't have a meaning
Cause..
[Bridge]
I still don't have the reason
And you don't have the time
And it really makes me wonder
If I ever gave a f**k about you and I...
and so this is goodbye
[Chorus 1 + 2]
Give me something to believe in
Cause I don't believe in you,
Anymore, Anymore
I wonder if it even makes a difference,
It even makes a difference to try
And you told me how you're feeling
But I don't believe it's true
Anymore Anymore
I wonder if it even makes a difference to cry
(Oh no)
So this is goodbye
So this is goodbye, yeah (x 3)
(Oh no)
Maybe my prac crit not zai but I doubt anybody else can unravel its double meaning. Whatever la. I just like the tune. =)
I went to collect these from the Post Office today. After a few should-i-should-i-nots, I just went with my heart.
Got the large blue hobo and I didn't regret my choice of size and colour. So much prettier than the classic brown one.
And I've also decided to get this cute floral bee casual handcarry when the seller offered me a great price. This is so much roomier than my demi pouch. Now I have a hand carry bag which can fit my fat wallet, 2 handphones and camera with so much more space left.
Love my new buys!
It’s early but I’m so drowsy from all the cold and cough medicine. I think I'll concuss as soon as I click "publish". ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........
Saturday Night Out with the HH Babes
On the most recent Saturday, I met up with some fellow hh babes. We spent the bulk of our night queueing outside New York New York. Inititally I thought it was a meet up for the usual 4 of us. However, a few other babes joined us and it was a great time catching up with one another.
I was already like 45minutes late (due to work!) but when I reached, they were like at the end of the queue. Apparently alot of people behind them kept walking away. We were so bored that we spent our time asking qian4 bian3 wen4 da2 ti2. It turned out that em and me are the LAMEST LAMERS around. No wonder we worked so well together as a team last time.
em and wy thinking of the soultion to which question was it?
After more than an hours's wait, we got ourselves great seats. Luckily our number was not any bigger or we would have to wait even longer for a huge table. The table was just right, cosy enough. No photos of food as we shared all the dishes. Because our table was so small, our food came in ala carte buffet style. Hehe... We practically dig in, finish up the dish and wait for the next dish to be served.
We have 3 August babies in this group: wy, py & hs!
wy
hs
Oops... no photo of py.
All of us
py,ts, sd, hs, me, em, wy.
It was great meeting with you gals. Although I was quite sleepy and not in my usual siao mode but I felt I was more opened, relaxed and siao with you gals as compared to my colleagues in my current co. Not that they aren't nice, they are. Just that I haven't revealed my true colours yet. Hehe...
Oh and ts, I know you don't read my blog but welcome to the Alumni club in a few weeks time. ;P
Somewhere Only We Know
By Keane
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete
Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?
Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?
[break]
Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
So if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
So why don't we go
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?
I liked this song when I heard it on radio 1 or 2 years back and soon forgot about it. When they played it as the trailer song for The Lake House, I fell in love with it. I watched the show, expecting the song to be played any minute. I sat till the end credits, thinking they would play it. But no. I didn't know what's the title nor who sang it. I asked my 2nd sis but she hasn't been watching movie for long and did not catch the trailer. However, once I hummed it, she walked to her PC, opened her music folder and played it.
I was ecstatic.
It was soon after that I realised scores of people have been searching for "that song on The Lake House trailer".
I hope to find a place like that too; somewhere only we know. =)
