Instagram Snapshots ~*August 2013*~

Hello September! August passed by so quickly and I know you wouldn't even stop longer for tea that very soon you would whizz by as well. Taking a break from travel posts, here is a summary of what happened in August.

 photo blogseparatorflowersmall.gif

~1 August 2013~
Throw back Thursday. Taking the road less travelled.

~2 August 2013~
Thanx dear friend Viv for sending me such a cute kitty cat wallpaper. It's so cute though the apps would be covering the kitties except for the last page. I would have designed the wallpaper such that parts of the cats stick out from the outline of the squares like a head popping out or a cute little paw.

~4 August 2013~
Bro-in-law's meow meow just like a boss. The hub's voice in the background went "why are you taking the (cut off portion: stupid cat?")

~4 August 2013~
The gelish this time is growing out pretty smoothly with edges that stay put. Unlike the last time where the edges are flipping upwards from the bottom which made me wanna peel them off, I would slowly cut them away and avoid the harsh filing and soaking off for this round. BIL's meow meow lends a great orange furry background for these shots. (Check out her tongue!)

~5 August 2013~
Sunday doodling. Mega Moody Monster wanted to draw something which would allow me to unleash the nasty monsters within. I ended up practising drawing with black pen and with controlled strokes, the negativity in me slowly simmered down. (Credit: I referenced the overall back view of the girl from somewhere and modified the rest to fit my theme.)

~7 August 2013~
Had nice home-cooked food by Daddy and now we are enjoying coffee liqueur with vanilla ice cream for dessert. All the liquor is at the bottom of the mug. Yummy. Taste like super super thick Bailey's Irish Cream. What a perfect end to a hectic short work week and a warm welcome to the looooong weekend! I've never in my life had a 4-day long weekend since I work on weekends for my previous jobs and I'm feeling really happy now.

~7 August 2013~
Went to pick mum up just now and she rummaged her bag saying that she had something for me to eat. I told her I was very full. Then she fished out this packet of bak kwa and said it was for me and the hubz to share. So cute! Heart-shape bak kwa. Lidat also can ah?

~8 August 2013~
Throw back Thursday. Daddy and Mummy in their couple tee. I have a slight aversion towards couple tees. Ok... they must not be exactly similar; slight variation in print or colour is fine. This is the best couple in their couple tee ever!

~8 August 2013~
Had a nice chat and filling lunch just now and thought I could survive with just supper later. But I'm HUNGWEE now. Hmmph...

~8 August 2013~
I side stepped from my intended path of meeting my gal pal for lunch when I stumbled upon NOISE Singapore exhibition at ION. An initiative of the National Arts Council, Noise Singapore is dedicated to making "noise" about the creative talent of young people aged 35 and below. I like this exhibit: "It is from a blank space where ideas are infinite." This sounds just like my tag line. =p Unfortunately that of late, my mind was simply a blank with no ideas.

~8 August 2013~
Hanging quotes at Noise Singapore exhibition. I know which is my favourite. How about you?

~9 August 2013~
Clad in our national colours on National Day for a feast of Singapore food. For my American and Canadian friends, "colour" is spelt with a "u" coz Singapore uses Standard British English. Don't ask me why I use the "z" instead of the "s" for other words though. I'm not good at standards.

~9 August 2013~
Local cuisine for dinner on National Day--chicken rice, white chai tau kueh (carrot cake), char kway teow. Officially full!

~10 August 2013~
Chi cats left their paw prints in Venice. That's our hotel-- Hotel Galleria in the background. New post about Venice up on my blog. http://iamjolene.blogspot.sg/2013/08/summer-in-italy-venice.html?m=0

~11 August 2013~
Sunday sketching. Trying my hands at contemporary fashion illustration. This is just a concept drawing with colour pencils and would look a lot better with water colours and digital enhancing but... I'm not an art student schooled on those techniques.

~15 August 2013~
Throw back Thursday-- The freezing walk in Central Park, NYC made warm by the people I love in winter 2009. I miss those happy times... I miss you...

~15 August 2013~
A regram from mmintmintmn. Anyone else feels like this too?

~18 August 2013~
Black pork gyoza (something new) and BBQ pork cheek (our usuals) for starters at Santouka. Shiok!

~18 August 2013~
Our usual set at Santouka-- Shio ramen small, salmon rice bowl and accompaniment of pickles, chawanmushi, salad. Officially super full. Can't even finish a small bowl of my favourite ramen now.

~19 August 2013~
Chi cats left their paw prints in Florence. Taken from Piazzale Michelangelo with Florence city centre as the back drop. New post about Florence Part I up on my blog. http://iamjolene.blogspot.sg/2013/08/summer-in-italy-florence-part-i.html?m=0

~20 August 2013~
A super duper spontaneous lunch with my other family... my favourite gals!

~20 August 2013~
In preparation for a work trip to mosquito land, I had 4 vaccinations on the same day. 1 oral, 3 injections. I've never experienced jab that caused this much of 酸痛 (aching pain) since I was in Primary 1. The typhoid one on the left is bruising up while the tetanus on the right is becoming as painful as the left. Can't sleep coz I can't sleep like a mummy for the whole night without turning.

~22 August 2013~
The birthday gal almost forgot that we were meeting up for her birthday. Love you gals. It's back to 三缺一 again.

~22 August 2013~
Bird theme "bird day" card for dear friend.

~24 August 2013~
It's been a tiring but very happy week meeting up with 3 different groups of gal friends on week days. Spontaneous lunch, birthday, farewell... Bon voyage to my dear friend, Sam! Gambatte ne!

~24 August 2013~
Guess what @tifducky @gerrachong and I are going to do at 11:11pm? Nope, we are not gonna eat cotton candy.

~25 August 2013~
After about 3 hours, this was the result of our Poke Poke Craft. @tifducky and @gerrachong finished faster than me coz I was snapping photos of the process as I went along. Verdict: Poke Poke Craft requires loads of patience.

~25 August 2013~
My poke poke pig! It's so furry... Hahaha... I dunno how to tuck those fur in with the felting needle. The hubby is so insulting. When I happily dangled poke poke pig at him, he said it looked like a bat. I explained to him how difficult it was to shape the head, the ears, the snout and the nostrils from felt and how tif and gera said it's a job well done. He replied, "It looks like a bat lor. It looks like that decapitated bat I found. -_-||| It's a pig colour. It's a pig snout. how on earth does it look like a bat???!

~25 August 2013~
Craft night-- Felting a Pig. It's really intriguing to see how fluffy cotton candy material could be poked till it transform into a pig with a simple tool called a felting needle. Haven't thought of a name for my pig. It shall just be called "Poke Poke Pig". Does it look like boy boy or girl girl pig?

~25 August 2013~
Poke Poke Pig looks spiffier after his fur cut. I couldn't tuck the stray felt in and had to resort to trimming them. On a separate note, @tifducky and @gerrachong's other halves gladly accepted their gifts, praising them for their effort. My other half gave me 101 reasons like why it's an ugly pig, it's a bat, it's a pinky pink bat, it's too round, it would be flattened in a week if put into his pocket, it doesn't match his keys... and after a night and a day, he grudgingly accepted Poke Poke Pig. I don't think there would be any more overdose of Poke Poke Pig photos after this.

~29 August 2013~
Throw back Thursday -- Mum's birthday 2009. We would be celebrating her last year of being in the big FIVE this Saturday though she doesn't look a day older. And yes, my family poses stupidly for photos too. It's not just me.

~31 August 2013~
Mummy's birthday at Morton's. The menu is personalized with her name on it.

~31 August 2013~
Happy 59th birthday to Mummy!

  2. Your mama is such a pretty lady :) You're lucky to share her genes! ^^

Aw, Jo, don't worry about hubby being so opposed to Poke Poke Pig! He's just trying to act tough because "real men don't like plushies". On the inside I bet he's really proud his wifey made something cute for him. Even if it's a bat-pig. Bat-pigs are cute too.

I love your drawings, they're so whimsical. Wish I could draw like that, but it's a style I've yet to master. The drawings of the girls remind me of the ones you see on the fashionable notepads everyone used to really want in secondary school (haven't used a notepad since then), and the one you drew for your friend (the "happy bird day" one; great pun by the way, I love it!) reminds me of a book I read when I was growing up, which had such cute pictures. It's fair to say these old children's books were the ones who made me want to be able to draw better.

I hope you're well, Jo, and that you're enjoying yourself with friends and family. Stay awesome! x

    1. Thank you dear Bibi. I was smiling and am smiling now as I'm re-reading your comment.

Well, the hubz put PPP in the side table's drawer where he put his wallet and stuff. I demanded to know why he put PPP there instead of using it and he said, "So that I can see the cute pig every day when I open the drawer." Actually, he just doesn't wanna bring hang PPP anywhere visible coz "real men don't like plushies". Lol...

I think such fashion drawings would look a lot better as digital art. I don't even know how to go about doing that so for now, I'm pretty pleased with what I could come out with pencil and colour pencils. Fashionable notepads in secondary school? We are of such a huge age gap. Hehehe... I was introduced to the beautiful fashion illustrations of Jordi Labanda in college when his works started being printed on notepads and other stationery. I don't know if you meant that style of drawing. Actually I'm not much of an artist as I usually draw inspirations from pictures I've seen before or model after certain pictures and modifying such that my style is in the drawing. You are an artist yourself too! You created cartoon Bibi all by yourself!

I must visit your blog soon! It seems like it's been a long while.

Yum!:D Btw, nice summary of the month, happy belated bday to your mom, the last photo is so lovely!:) Im in love with the piggy you felted, how sweet! You are really creative and adorable, I like your drawning, I wish I was able too but never learnt or known, I am better to color than draw!:) Happy Sunday, baci!:) xo

  4. You had an eventful month. I don't know where to start. My month was so boring compared to yours. The food looks so yummy. I would love to try it all. I have never seen bak kwa nor couple tees. Your parents tees are really so funny. The Poke poke pig is super cute and it doesn't look like a bat at all. Men usually don't like fluffy and cute toys.

  6. Omg the felted pig! You should've been like "oh bat? really? no pig for you then!!!" lol I think it looks like a pig =) I should try felting some time too, seems like the rage lately but I'll probably end up stabbing myself multiple times lol I really like that cartoon of "acting okay" I feel like that quite a bit sometimes LOL please do no interrupt hahahaha

We have Santouka ramen over here too!! It's super popular, there are even line ups that develop sometimes, I personally and not too huge of a fan though >< that coffee liqueur dessert you had with your dad looks so good! I wonder if I could mix it with something non alcoholic? Just coffee? haha I think I just want to eat ice cream out of a cup, I used to that that =P

Your gel nails were so pretty and I'm glad they didn't flip upward! That happened to my mummys gel nails, I know how painful and annoying it could be >< Your doodle is really good!!!

re: Hahaha I love tea so I'm happy 80% is tea LOL I actually find it super flattering when people associate my blog with afternoon tea =3

    1. Do you have those $2 Daiso shops in Canada? I know that felting kit could range from the very expensive ones to those we bought for $2 at Daiso. Those act as a good practice.

I know of some Canadian blogger friends who love Santouka too. You don't like it? Why??? We have only 2 outlets here. The coffee liqueur could be drunk on its own but it's really strong, I don't like it neat and of course you could mix it with non alcoholic stuff so for us, my Dad felt vanilla ice cream was a good mix.

      I'm glad I flattered you! =D

  7. aww love your life instagram posts! :) omgosh your poke poke pig is SOOOO SO CUTE!! you're so talented i have no DIY skills whatsoever -___- and it totally doesn't look like a bat it definitely looks like a piggie!!!

i can't believe your mom is 59 years old!! she looks SOOO SO YOUNG!! you're lucky you're going to have really amazing genes the rest of your life hahaha!! i thought for sure your mom was in her 40's!!!!

omgosh that pork belly looks SOOOO DELICIOUS!! drooling haven't had really yummy japanese/krn bbq in so long!

yes the food portions there were really big haha.. you know it's funny i've never found that france has small food portions.. even in paris i thought the portions are REALLY big and decadent.. but i just think french woman are much better at portion control HAHAHA. like i remember whenever we ordered foie gras or pate it was like A HUGE giant portion and i think i was curious one time and i decided to google it.. just to see how much calories it would be it was like 2000 calories -___- but i think french woman tend to only eat like one or two bites.. with a glass of wine and call it a night.. unlike me.. who needs to order a foie gras.. and then an entree.. and then a dessert HAHAHA.

but no i barely finished 1/3 of my plate... and didn't really eat the fries at all.. but the hubs been on a food binge lately.. and finished all of his meat and finished mine too!

oh the gold & diamond bracelets are from different places hehe.. the "P" bracelet is from a few years ago when my husband and i got married.. i don't know where he got it from.. but i love it because his last name starts with a "P" so "P" is now my married last name :)

the one with the 5 tiny diamonds spaced out he bought me at a tiny italian jewelry shop in rome :)

and the one with the tiny pave diamonds that looks like a diamond bar.. he bought somewhere in germany i'm not sure where haha.

and yes! that's how my hair looks when i just let it dry naturally and don't do anything with it.. i find it so boring.. that's why i end up curling it so often haha.

    1. Maybe I should collate all the comments which say that PPP doesn't look like a bat and show it to the hubz. Yeah my mum looks younger than almost all, if not all her friends who could be a decade younger. I don't know how she does it too.

When I was in Paris, I felt that the food portions weren't little too. Why is it that most French fine dining in my country serve their courses in small portions when the country of origin doesn't? Hmmm... Your hubz has such a huge appetite!

  18. Fun collection of photos Jo! I'm always envious of the yummy foods you eat. I've seen a few travel shows featuring Singapore and it looks like there is a great variety of cuisine there. Great drawings and good job on Poke Poke Pig. I bet your hubby secretly loves it but he pretends not to cause it's the manly thing to do :) And the throwback pic of your mom and dad in their couple tee's is awesome.

Thanks for your nice comment on Rena & Ian! You're right that this isn't an inexpensive hobby but they make me happy and they still cost way less than dollfies. They're the same size as Barbie and Ken so they fit their clothes. I like photographing them and I wish I could do it more often but it can be pretty time consuming to set up sometimes. My husband helps me sometimes especially when I take them outdoors and I'm very paranoid when I do that because I'm always afraid of something happening to them. I'm working on a post where I will show how they looked when I first got them because I also customized their looks. I like the dollfies too but some of them look so real it freaks me out a little ;)

I love your hobby a lot and I agree that some dollfies look so real that I feel they might come alove. Ian and Rena looks pleasant and not freaky at all even if they come alive. Hehehe... I used to have Pediophobia. Now I have Pediophobia for certain types of dolls.
